After eight years of meticulous excavation and research, an ancient settlement in Peru has finally opened its doors to curious visitors.

Peñico, located north of Lima, was first inhabited approximately 3,800 years ago. This remarkable site is believed to have served as a vital connection between remote Andean mountain settlements and the bustling cultural hubs of Caral along the coastline.

Caral-Supe, renowned as one of the oldest known civilizations in the Americas, left a significant legacy to Peñico, which likely inherited its wealth and traditions following Caral’s decline.

Nestled at 1,800 feet above sea level, Peñico boasts 18 identified structures, including a monumental public center. Here, archaeologists uncovered intriguing artifacts such as conch shell instruments and clay figurines.

“This urban center developed following the cultural tradition of the Caral,” Ruth Shady Solis, the lead researcher and director of the Caral Archaeological Zone, shared in a press release.

She further explained Peñico’s strategic importance: “Due to its strategic location, it connected coastal and mountain towns of Supe and Huaura, as well as those living in the Andean-Amazonian and the high Andean region.”

Radiocarbon dating has provided fascinating insights, revealing that Peñico’s earliest periods of activity coincided with the latter stages of Caral’s existence. This suggests a potential link between Caral’s decline and Peñico’s rise.

“After the loss of prestige of the first and oldest major cities of the Supe Valley, such as the Sacred City of Caral, the inhabitants of Peñico continued to actively participate in the networks of social and economic interaction consolidated in earlier times,” the statement elaborated.

This transition mirrors historical patterns seen in Ancient Mesopotamia, where Eridu, the first city, ceded importance to Uruk.

“It is possible that the prestige achieved by the Peñico society in the valley, added to its function as a node in the exchange network, was linked to the extraction and circulation of hematite,” the statement noted. This mineral, used for creating a red pigment, held significant symbolic value within Andean cosmology.

Today, Peñico is ready to welcome archaeologically-inclined visitors. The site offers trails through the ancient ruins, an interpretation center, and an attached museum, providing a fascinating glimpse into its storied past.
