  • Owner Ali Shirkhodaei believes in giving back to the community through acts of kindness.
  • Customers are encouraged to pay kindness forward after experiencing Ali’s generosity.

In a delightful corner of San Jose, a local dry cleaner is making waves with his generous spirit. Ali Shirkhodaei, the owner of Lux Cleaning and Alterations, is offering complimentary cleaning and pressing services to unemployed individuals preparing for job interviews.

This initiative stems from Ali’s desire to integrate kindness into his professional life.

“I think it will definitely give them some hope that the community they live in cares about them,” he shared.

He continued, “It’s not about just getting, it’s about giving. That’s the part that brings all of us joy.”

Ali’s journey began in 1986 when he moved to the United States from Iran. Despite holding a degree in molecular biology, he found himself starting a new path with Lux Cleaners after struggling to find work in his field.

His business has since flourished in Silicon Valley.

Each week, about 5 to 10 people visit Lux Cleaners to benefit from Ali’s kind offer. Recently, a woman who needed her shirt pressed for a tech company interview returned to share her success with Ali.

She not only landed the job but also left a glowing 5-star review, stating, “I definitely felt the love of my community.”

Ali and his team were thrilled by her news, perhaps even more so than she was.

Ali’s remarkable work ethic is evident in his ability to complete tasks in record time, such as finishing jobs in four days that might take others four weeks.

He tackles intricate garments like Indian sarees and wedding dresses with enthusiasm, always aiming to spread positivity.

“That’s one of the things that I love about having a small business and dealing with people on a daily basis,” Ali expressed.

“I see many different faces every day and believe me, a small smile can change their day.”
