Scientists in China discovered that when male mice exercised, their male offspring were born with greater endurance, more resistant muscles, and less tendency for weight gain, and these perks were not linked to genetic changes.

This breakthrough was driven by epigenetics, with special RNA changes in sperm—boosted by exercise—impacting the next generation, rather than alterations in the underlying DNA.

“We were surprised that a single RNA could have such an impact,” biologists commented on the findings.

The team also identified similar RNA markers in the sperm of active men, suggesting that the health choices of fathers may play a remarkable role in the fitness of future children.

While the endurance trait was only seen in male offspring, the study opens new questions about the influence of lifestyle on future generations and how microRNAs are transmitted.
