First Responder Rescues Trapped Cockapoo From Fire

Published

  • First responders from New Jersey found a trapped dog on the 2nd-floor balcony of a house on fire.
  • One of them climbed the balcony on a makeshift ladder composed of scaffolding and a chair to get the dog.
  • The hero cop is scheduled to receive a “meritorious service award” for his deed.

Pets are not just pets.  They are part of the family.  And when their lives are in danger, it is a blessing to have first responders who walk the extra mile to save them.

Just like the hero cop from New Jersey.

At first, Sgt. Brian Phair and Patrolman Travis Sodon were relieved that there were no humans trapped in a house fire that they responded to.  But on second look, they realized that fur babies were trapped.  One at the back of the building and one cockapoo on a second-floor balcony.

Even with no proper equipment, Sodon immediately found ways to scale up the building to reach the frightened dog.

Everything was captured on Sodon’s body cam and the Atlantic Highlands Police Department released the footage.

In the department’s Facebook page, Chief Rossbach wrote, “I am happy to share the body-worn camera footage from this rescue, as it is a fine example of the extraordinary work that our first responders do on a day in and day out basis.”

The video showed Sodon moving scaffolding which is not that high to reach the dog.  Still, Sodon was determined to get the dog out of harm’s way.

Luckily, a former fire chief saw Sodon’s attempts and quickly hands him a chair that they stack on top of the scaffolding.  This enabled Sodon to finally reach the dog at the balcony which was located 15 feet off the ground!

If you get to watch the video, it was indeed a rescue that deserves recognition. Good thing Sodon had good balance as it was a precarious makeshift “ladder”.

And yes, in the coming weeks, the department will present Patrolman Sodon with a “meritorious service award” for his heroic action.

Well done, Patrolman Travis Sodon!
