Young Flight Instructor’s Jaw-Dropping Highway Landing Will Restore Your Faith in Humanity

Quick Smiles:
- A 21-year-old flight instructor safely landed a plane on a Florida highway after engine trouble, saving her student and countless motorists
- She stayed calm under pressure, using her 1,300 hours of training to execute a textbook emergency landing
- A grateful community rallied to support her dream of becoming a commercial pilot
Truck driver Eric Jordan was traveling on I-10 east in Escambia County, Florida, on August 3, 2026, when he witnessed something absolutely miraculous. A small plane landed directly on the highway around 9:55 a.m. near mile marker 14.
Emily Shelton, just 21 years old, was operating the Piper PA-28 Cherokee for Pensacola Air Flight School as an instructor alongside a nervous student during their very first flight lesson. When engine trouble struck, this young hero didn’t panic—she became a lifesaver.
“If I hadn’t seen a shadow over my truck and slowed down, he would have been on the inside of the cab,” Eric Jordan recalled.
“As you see in the video, it was a close call for the truck and for the sign, but he landed; he kept it in control.”
Emily had contacted air traffic control to report the smell of burning oil in the cockpit. Rather than freeze in fear, she calmly explained the problem and prepared to land right on the busy highway. She successfully brought the plane down safely, and incredibly, no one was hurt.
Her composure under pressure left everyone in awe.
“I feel my training has prepared me exceptionally well for this moment,” Emily shared.
“I’ve practiced this exact scenario many times, just never thought I’d actually have to execute it in real life.”
With 1,300 flight hours under her belt, Emily’s preparation paid off in the most dramatic way possible. Her quick thinking and steady hands protected her student and every driver on that stretch of highway.
Loved ones created a fundraiser for Emily following her heroic landing to help pay for flight school so she can continue pursuing her dream of becoming a commercial airline pilot.
“How she landed was nothing short of miraculous, as she narrowly avoided traffic and other obstacles and managed to guide the plane to the shoulder of the road, protecting her student and motorists,” the fundraiser reads.
“Emily has been working as a flight instructor to build her hours while working toward becoming a pilot at a regional airline.”
The community response has been heartwarming, with donations pouring in to support this everyday hero. The fundraiser has already raised over $1,000 and continues to grow.
Experienced pilot George Siger told reporters that Emily’s landing was nothing short of extraordinary.
“They were probably doing somewhere around 60, 70 miles an hour in a glide,” he explained.
“So yeah, that’s still pretty darn fast, especially if you hit something solid like a sign. And then you still have altitude to deal with. So it was amazing. It’s one of those things that it’s hard to believe. Yeah, that was great.”
Emily’s incredible story is a beautiful reminder that heroes walk among us every day—sometimes they’re 21-year-old flight instructors who stay cool under pressure and save lives with skill, courage, and grace.
