In the picturesque setting of Uluabat Lake, a remarkable friendship unfolds each spring that has charmed an entire nation. For 14 years, Adem Yilmaz, a humble fisherman from Eskikaraagac Village in Turkey, eagerly anticipates the arrival of his dear friend, a white stork named Yaren.

Yilmaz casts his nets and lines, patiently waiting for Yaren’s return from a 2,500-mile journey from sub-Saharan Africa. The anticipation is palpable, and Yilmaz shares, “Yaren generally comes at the beginning of the month, and when it didn’t show up, I feared something had happened to it.”

His concerns were relieved when Yaren finally appeared, gracing the prow of his rowboat. “This morning, it came to my boat and ate the fish I had brought for it,” Yilmaz recounts joyfully.

Yaren’s journey, which traces a path through the Balkans, Greece, and Turkey/, is part of an annual migration that ends in a reunion cherished by many.
