A 5-year-old boy battling cancer is making it through his medical journey with the help of Post-it notes and some newly-found friends.

Meyer Mixdorf was struggling with his brain tumor treatment at Children’s Mercy Kansas City hospital when his mother, Liz Mixdorf, thought of something to brighten up his days, according to ABC affiliate KMBC.

Liz made a Post-it note picture of a smiley face on Meyer’s hospital window to entertain him. They were surprised to find a similar smiley face on a building across the street the following days.

That building was Truman Medical Center/University Health. When staff member Johnna Schindlbeck noticed the smiley face Liz made, she and her team thought to do “something fun” for the ‘patient’ at Children’s Mercy.

“I know there are children over there and I don’t know what they’re going through, and if I can make them smile a little bit, that’s all that mattered,” said another staffer Cheryl Grey.

Both parties continued making Post-it designs on their respective windows in the weeks to follow.

What began as a simple smiley face transitioned to more elaborate designs, including Mario characters, Ninja Turtles and Minions, among others.

Neither party was aware of who exactly was behind each Post-it art piece until Liz put a note that read “Mom,” GMA reported.

“If this little art makes him happy, gives him something to look forward to, and it makes his mother and his family know that other people care … it was so rewarding for me to see,” Johnna told GMA. “I was just at the right place at the right time to be part of something that was so simply beautiful.”

When Meyer’s condition improved, his mom took him to the other building, hoping to meet — and thank — their ‘mystery’ friends.

“I went to the security guard and she said, ‘What are you here for?’ and I said, ‘I have a strange story,’” Liz told GMA, adding that she showed the guard pictures of the window art.

When they reached the eighth floor of the Truman Medical building, “everybody started crying” as staff realized who Liz and Meyer were.

“It was really neat meeting him and to hug [Liz] and just know what it meant,” Johnna said. “It’s something I’ll never forget for sure.”

More good news. Liz told KMBC that Meyer’s latest MRI is looking good and showing no sign of disease. The family hopes on bringing Meyer home soon.
