Imagine the most delightful sound in the world, then think of it in the form of a howling German Shepherd. This season’s sonic surprise came from Nevada, where Charlie, a 3-year-old German Shepherd, was captured on camera teaching his 7-month-old “brother” Benji the joy of howling.

This charming video has taken TikTok by storm, amassing more than 1.1 million views and well over 111,000 likes. The proud pet parents, especially their mother Sandra, shared that the pups share a unique bond.

She noted that the pups are “very attached to each other and behave as if they were real brothers.”

The TikTok clip perfectly captures this bond as Charlie and Benji relax on the sofa, with diminutive Benji attempting a “weird, growling” type of howl. Charlie, syncing up with Benji’s vibe, begins to join in — and that’s when the howling harmony truly begins.

“Charlie started going along with it; that’s where they began to howl after each other,” Sandra explained. Charlie’s deep, mournful howl meets Benji’s high-pitched excitement, creating a dynamic howling exchange that provides a hilarious viewing experience.

In the caption accompanying the video, Sandra simply wrote: “GSD [German shepherd dog] teaching puppy how to howl.”

TikTok users were thrilled, flocking to the @charliethegermanshepherd account and leaving provocative comments. Among the multitude, one user thoughtfully remarked: “He now has a shepherd accent when he howls that’s cute.”

While another said: “I’ll start, and you join in on the chorus.” One user declared Benji a quick learner, and another expressed: “This is the best thing I’ve seen, in a long time.”

The howling incident occurred when Sandra and her partner went out for a grocery run, leaving the dogs with their daughter. They had no idea that they would return to a video of their dogs’ new talent for howling.

According to Sandra, Benji is a unique blend of Chihuahua, golden retriever, and dachshund, which may explain his early adoption of howling — dachshunds and Chihuahuas are known to be vocal breeds. German Shepherds, like Charlie, are also famous for their affection towards family and are great with kids. They are a popular choice for a family pet, ranking fourth on the AKC’s most-popular dog breeds list in 2023.
