  • A giant inflatable ball has been the newest trend in Stoughton.
  • The errant ball, dubbed as ‘Roly Poly Ole,’ rolls around town, collecting signatures and smiles.
  • Other nearby communities are also thinking of having their own ‘Ole’ for some spontaneous fun.

Meet the newest, jauntiest mascot bringing good vibes in Stoughton, Wisconsin: a giant inflatable beach ball.

The oversized ball’s wayward neighborhood venture actually happened by ‘accident.’

“Honestly it started as misplaced. Someone on the Stoughton Facebook page reached out asking if someone was missing a huge beach ball because there was one that had blown to the end of a road. And that’s literally how it started,” Instagrammer Katherine Marshall Kartman told 98.1 KHAK.

Since then, the errant inflatable has become a popular source of entertainment, even earning the name ‘Roly Poly Ole.’

Ole then began rolling around, making friends wherever he goes while collecting lots of smiles and signatures — including police officers’ signs, who jokingly called him a “neighborhood prowler.”

And just like that, the town has been cheery and bright, with its people anticipating to stumble upon Ole. Stoughton is even talking about having an annual event called “Ole Crawl.”

Katherine wrote on Instagram: “The Stoughton Community Beach Ball greeted us first thing this morning by rolling up onto our driveway ????????????. Thanks to the Davie family for helping it get a good nights sleep…We all signed it and then sent it on its merry way, traveling north down Hilldale. Keep it rolling! #stoughtonbeachball”

It is expected for Ole to get into trouble at times, like springing a leak or losing amounts of air, but city residents are coming to the rescue. Fire Chief Josh Ripp, for example, gave him some patches and pumps, and so Ole’s spontaneous adventure continues.

Ole has also encouraged nearby areas to make their own jaunty orbs to spread some fun around.

With Ole’s short lifespan, he will likely be retired at the end of summer. But until then, he has a long road to explore and a bunch of smiles to give.
