Hope Shines After Decades on Death Row
Quick Smiles:
- Anthony Ray Hinton spent 30 years on death row before being exonerated.
- He now advocates for justice and supports others facing wrongful convictions.
- Hinton finds strength in hope, laughter, and helping his community.
Anthony Ray Hinton was wrongfully convicted in 1985 and endured nearly three decades on death row. With unwavering optimism, he now dedicates his life to preventing others from suffering similar injustices.
He recalls
“The smell of someone literally being set on fire – that alone is cruel and unusual punishment.”
Hinton’s memories of his first day and loss of his mother mark some of the hardest moments in his journey.
Despite tremendous hardship, Hinton created hope by starting a book club, forming friendships, and offering comfort to his fellow inmates.
He says
“That’s one thing I loved about the row: even on the most difficult days, we found a reason, and a ‘why’, to laugh.”
With help from Bryan Stevenson and the Equal Justice Initiative, Hinton was eventually freed when evidence proved his innocence.
His first words upon release were
“the sun does shine”
Those words eventually became the title of his inspiring memoir.
Today, Hinton raises his voice as a tireless community educator.
He shares
“I need the world to hear my story, and I need the world to realise that this was planned. It didn’t happen by accident, and until we fix this system, only God can help us.”
Even without an apology or compensation, Hinton remains determined and positive, declaring
“But if I was angry, I’d be giving them too much satisfaction that they broke me. They didn’t break me: they motivated me.”
Let Anthony Ray Hinton’s resilience remind us of the power of hope, the importance of justice, and the ability to make a difference. Stay inspired and share a bit of good news today!
