How To Ensure Your Pet Enjoys Vacations
Quick Smiles:
- Experts share top choices for pet care while you travel

- Simple steps help pets and owners have worry-free breaks
Planning your next holiday is an exciting time, but for pet owners, it sometimes comes with a side of worry. Who will care for your beloved companion while you’re away enjoying a new adventure?
The good news is there are caring solutions to ensure your fur-baby is safe and happy, allowing you to relax and make wonderful travel memories worry-free.
Veterinarians and animal trainers recommend a few excellent options for vacationing pet parents. Here are the top three approaches that keep tails wagging and whiskers twitching.
Pet-Sitting at Home
One of the most comfortable choices for pets is having a professional sitter come to your home. This allows your dog or cat to stay in their own environment with familiar sights, sounds, and smells. Pets benefit from maintaining their daily routines and getting one-on-one attention from a trusted caregiver.
Dr. Liza Cahn, a veterinarian at Embrace Pet Insurance, explains, “This allows your pet to stay in their own environment, keep a normal routine, and receive one-on-one care.” Depending on your animal’s needs, a sitter might stop by a few times a day or even stay overnight for extra reassurance.
Senior veterinarian Dr. Carly Fox adds that some vet clinic staff and technicians offer pet-sitting services. This adds peace of mind for pets with special medical needs because “some vet clinic staff or techs may offer pet-sitting services, which could add a layer of trust and medical expertise, especially for pets with health issues.” While personalized care is great, pet-sitting can be pricier and less suited for pets who need company throughout the day.
Boarding Facilities and Pet Day Care
If your furry friend is more outgoing, boarding kennels and day cares offer lots of social interaction and activities. These facilities often provide group playtimes, fun events, and even vacation-themed treats!
Dion Studinski of Ancillary K9 explains, “Many offer group play, structured activities, and even dog ‘vacation packages.’” For pets who enjoy new experiences and other animals, boarding can be a fun break. However, it might be stressful for shy pets or those with health concerns, so it’s important to evaluate each facility carefully.
Home-Boarding with a Sitter
Another loving solution is home-boarding. Here, your pet stays in the home of a trusted sitter instead of a larger kennel. Dr. Cahn calls this “a middle ground” that combines a cozy environment with individualized attention—a great pick for pets who like a home setting but enjoy some social time, too. Home-boarding is often more affordable than in-home sitting, but every pet is unique, so match your companion’s temperament to the setting.
Dion Studinski wisely recommends, “I always advise clients to match the environment to their dog’s temperament and training level, and to ask lots of questions before booking any service.”
Regardless of which care option you select, the experts all agree: take time to check references, confirm credentials, and consider a trial run to ensure the best possible experience for your pet.
Bringing Your Pet With You
If saying goodbye feels too hard, more and more travel options welcome your furry family members! Dion Studinski says, “Road trips are one of the most dog-friendly choices. Your dog stays with you the whole time and you can plan stops for walks and play.” Dr. Fox enjoys destinations with outdoor areas and pet-friendly accommodations, noting, “I personally love hiking vacations or beach destinations like San Diego, Cape Cod, or the Hamptons.”
Many hotels now offer pet beds, bowls, and outdoor dining. While bringing your pet along means extra planning—such as packing their veterinary records, medications, and a pet first-aid kit—the joy of exploring together can make the effort worthwhile.
Still, Dr. Cahn notes, “Although the idea of traveling with your pet might seem appealing, logistically, it is often easier to leave them at home.” Some pets struggle with travel or need a solid routine to feel secure, so listen to your animal’s needs and comfort level. As Dr. Cahn encourages, the best vacations are those where both you and your pet can relax, whether you’re together or apart.
With a little research and plenty of love, you can find the perfect arrangement. Whether your pup prefers a stay-at-home snuggle, a group pet hotel, or an exciting road trip, your care ensures their happiness while you’re off making memories.
