Italian Village Revives with Stunning Murals and Joyful Tourism

In a fascinating twist of fate, a small hamlet in southern Italy has transformed from a ghost town into a bustling tourist destination. Stornara, located in the picturesque Puglia region, was once facing the same challenges as many other Italian towns: dwindling populations as younger generations moved to urban areas.

However, local artist Lino Lombardi refused to watch his hometown crumble.

In 2017, Lombardi launched Stramurales, an annual street art festival that has brought global artists to Stornara. The inaugural festival in 2018 saw the creation of six murals, and today, over 140 vibrant artworks adorn the town.

“Suddenly there were loads of people turning up with cameras and guidebooks,” recalled Antonio Maglione, a local café owner who was on the verge of closing his business.

“I had to quickly learn to say ‘welcome’ in five different languages.”

The murals have not only drawn thousands of visitors each year but have also revived the local economy. Since 2020, tourism revenue has increased by 25%, leading to the opening of eight new businesses, including restaurants and B&Bs.

“The murals saved my business, but more than that, they saved our community,” Maglione added.

The town’s population is now on the rise, with young families choosing to return. Rita Gensano, a 45-year-old who moved back to care for her parents, shared her initial reluctance.

“When I first returned it felt like a sacrifice, it was like walking into a ghost town,” she said.

“But actually it has become something extraordinary which I have been fortunate to be a part of.”

Stornara’s success has inspired other struggling towns to seek similar artistic rejuvenations. Lombardi, reflecting on the town’s transformation, said, “Our community has painted itself back to life, one wall at a time.”

“At first people thought I was crazy, but I couldn’t just watch the town fade away.”

Residents actively participate in the artistic process, voting on mural themes that reflect the town’s rich cultural history. This year’s festival, scheduled for July, promises to feature artists from across the continent.

“Our experience can help other communities—that’s even more meaningful,” Lombardi concluded.

Stornara’s story is a testament to the power of art to breathe life back into places once thought lost.
