Thanks to dedicated conservation and collaboration, Mexico is witnessing an inspiring resurgence in its jaguar population, with the most recent survey estimating around 5,300 thriving across the nation.

A second national census, led by Gerardo Ceballos and numerous partners, revealed a 30% rise in jaguar numbers over 15 years—an outcome that exceeded initial expectations and offered genuine hope for the species.

“It was a great surprise, terrific news,” Ceballos said.

Employing more than 50 research institutions and local leaders, the team installed 920 camera traps to monitor these adaptable cats in regions including the Yucatán peninsula, south Pacific, and beyond.

This increase is particularly uplifting considering vast tracts of forest have been cleared over the past decade, yet jaguars have shown remarkable resilience and adaptability as stealthy hunters and skilled swimmers.

“The fact that the country has managed to maintain and increase its population over the last 14 years is extraordinary,” shared Ceballos. “For me it’s great news for the country. Mexico and the world need good news.”

Continued conservation will remain vital as jaguars still face challenges from habitat loss, new highways, and diseases, but this population boom is a powerful reminder of what dedicated efforts can achieve.
