Officer Andy Pope, a remarkable Police Community Support Officer in West Midlands, England, has achieved an astonishing milestone by identifying his 3,000th suspect.
Known for his exceptional face-recognition skills, Pope has earned the nickname ‘Memory Cop’ for his ability to recall the faces of wanted individuals.
At 47, Pope has become renowned for his talent as a ‘super recognizer,’ a skill that allows him to spot suspects even in the most challenging circumstances.
Whether in crowded places or on grainy CCTV footage, his keen eye has proven invaluable.
Pope’s abilities are so refined that he has identified suspects even when they were wearing face masks during the pandemic.
One of his most impressive feats was recognizing a robber from a picture he had seen a year prior, and another suspect by a distinctive mole on their face.
“I’m just glad I can assist in catching crime suspects and keeping communities safe,” said Officer Pope.
“It’s really hard to explain how I manage to remember and spot faces, as it just comes naturally.”
To maintain his edge, Pope regularly reviews police briefings, CCTV images, and video stills, averaging one successful recognition every other shift.
His dedication to keeping communities safe is unwavering.
“It is hard to explain exactly how I remember so many faces. They just seem to stick in my mind,” Pope shared.
“Then, when I see the person in the flesh, it triggers that recognition.”
Officer Pope travels around the region on public transport, increasing his chances of encountering suspects whose images he has memorized.
His efforts not only aid his department but also assist other divisions in their work.
“I feel a great sense of pride and satisfaction if I manage to remember a suspect from an image who is then arrested. Hopefully, there will be many more to come in future.”
His extraordinary skills have led him to become one of the first 20 people in the world to join the Super Recognizers Association.
Despite this, Pope humorously admits, “My wife has to deal with things like birthdays and anniversaries. When it comes to remembering dates, I’m useless.”
Officer Pope’s unique abilities continue to make a significant impact, ensuring that communities remain safer and more secure.
