Laura Norman, a scientist with the US Geological Survey, discovered that even basic stone or log structures, known as Natural Infrastructure in Dryland Streams (NIDS), can transform barren desert landscapes into thriving oases.

Norman’s work in Arizona and New Mexico has led to year-round wetlands, where lush trees shade previously dry terrain, all by slowing down the natural flow of water.

“NIDS don’t block water completely, but let it move more gently, which helps ground water recharge and encourages plant growth,” she observed.

These simple barriers trap sediment, improve water quality, and give new wetlands the foundation to sustain wildlife and fight erosion, leading to a healthier landscape over time.

Norman’s 27-year field monitoring in San Bernadino proved that adding stone cages to creeks increases water and greenery season after season.

The method is both time-tested by nature and easy to implement, providing ranchers, land stewards, and local tribes with a powerful tool to revive arid land.
