Nurse Saves Drunk Raccoon with Quick CPR

Quick Smiles:

  • A Kentucky nurse revived a raccoon found unconscious in a dumpster after it ate fermented fruit.
  • The raccoon received CPR and recovered, later reuniting with its family in the wild.
  • Another heartwarming rescue in Canada saw a server leap into the sea to save a drowning raccoon.

When nurse Misty Combs arrived at work next to a moonshine distillery in Kentucky, she never expected to become a raccoon’s lifesaver. Spotting a distressed raccoon near a dumpster, she discovered two babies trapped inside, apparently after feasting on fermented peaches.

“I was like, ‘We have to get them out!’”

With help from a shovel, Combs quickly freed one baby, but the second was limp and unresponsive in water. Instinctively, she began performing CPR, admitting her concerns about both rabies and waking the animal.

“It had drowned and it was full of water, you could feel the water, so immediately, I just started doing CPR on it.”

Her quick thinking paid off—the revived raccoon was nicknamed Otis Campbell and cared for before its joyful release back to the forest. Combs’s compassion became a local legend, especially after she helped reunite the animal with its family days later.

In a parallel story, Canadian restaurant server Crystal Bakaluk spotted a flailing baby raccoon in the Pacific. When it went under, she dove in to save it, later performing chest compressions until the little survivor coughed and was safely handed off to colleagues.

“The little raccoon was flailing on its back, screaming, and in a few seconds, the screaming stopped, and it went under. So, I went in.”
