In an unexpected twist of fate, the smallest otter species in the world has reemerged in Nepal after an absence of 186 years.

This remarkable event unfolded last November when forestry officials stumbled upon an injured young otter at the meeting point of two major rivers.

The Asian short-clawed otter, officially classified as vulnerable, had not been credibly seen since 1839.

The discovery was made at the junction of the Rangun Khola river and the Puntara Khola stream in western Nepal, a bustling area frequented by miners, bathers, and fishermen.

“The sighting of an Asian small-clawed otter after 185 years is a remarkable discovery for conservation in Nepal,” noted an expert from the IUCN’s Otter Specialist Group.

This unexpected find has ended fears that the species might have vanished from the country altogether.

The otter, measuring between 28.6 and 37.6 inches and weighing up to 7.7 pounds, is known for its distinctively short claws.

These claws do not extend beyond the pads of its webbed feet, a unique feature that sets it apart.

“As it was found in a fragile and injured state, the forest officers decided to feed and nurse it,” shared Mohan Bikram Shrestha, who documented the discovery.

However, the officers were initially unsure of the otter’s species.

The images of the otter were sent to the scientific community, leading to its identification and recognition as a significant rediscovery.

“Otters are resilient to highly modified anthropogenic landscapes, flexible in habitat selection, and able to recover from low numbers,” the documentation concluded.
