  • Five-year-old Maddox woke up in the middle of the night, thought he was alone, and went outside to go to her grandpa’s house.
  • Wearing nothing but pajamas to keep him from the freezing cold, Maddox started to shiver at about 4AM in the middle of the road.
  • Thankfully, snowplow driver David saw him by the roadside and rescued him back to safety.

Maddox Pierce awoke in the middle of the night and decided to go out of the house in his pajamas. Without a coat, hat, mittens, and shoes to keep him warm, it was a sure formula for trouble with that kind of weather.

Apparently, Maddox thought he was alone in the house, so he went out to walk to his grandpa’s house.

His mom Brittany Weissenburger was at work during the night, and left his son with his 14-year-old aunt to babysit him.

It was around four in the morning when Maddox couldn’t hold the freezing cold anymore, he started shivering.

Meanwhile, snowplow driver David Gehrke, who was about to start his day at work in the early morning, saw Maddox by the roadside. He instantly got worried seeing the kid out in the five-degree Fahrenheit cold.

“As I passed Kilbourn Ave I seen something on the sidewalk,” David shared. “First l thought it was a deer or large dog. No, it was a child in his pajamas. No jacket or hat. He watched me and looked at me as I drove by.”

Curious and concerned at the same time, David pulled off to check the kid. The first thing he did was to keep Maddox warm, then called the police department to report a lost child.

“I immediately took my jacket off, wrapped it around him and put him in the truck. I called police dispatch. I got the heat blasting in the truck. I’ll keep him warm until we get help on the way,” David said.

The police arrived immediately, and was able to contact Maddox’s mom. Brittany was relieved that nothing serious happened to her son, and was thankful that David was kind enough to maneuver back his truck to save Maddox.

“I’ve been a mess since everything happened. He’s never, ever done anything like that before,” the mom said. “I’m so thankful. What are the odds that he would find him at that exact moment that he pretty much came outside?”

David, who’s as reassured as Brittany, was just so grateful that Maddox is out of harm’s way. “I am so glad I found this child. He could have frozen to death. PD thanked me for what I did. Today will be a day I will never ever forget.”
