  • Officer Dale Quesnel pulled over Jeanette Porter for over speeding.
  • Jeanette was on her way to a local food bank to avail of free diapers for her nieces.
  • Instead of writing an expensive ticket, Quesnel buys her the diapers with own money.

Jeanette Porter was in a hurry to avail herself of the free diapers that were being given away at a local food bank.

In her rush, an officer pulled her over for going too fast.

Jeanette said, “Well, I was speeding, I deserved the ticket. You know, ‘It is what it is,’ I totally understand.”

Deputy Sheriff and K9 handler Dale Quesnel of the Washington County Sheriff’s Office in New York was just doing his job.  But when he knew Jeanette’s reason, he changed his mind.

Quesnel said, “I just got to thinking she didn’t seem like she could afford a traffic ticket, so I didn’t think she could afford diapers either.”

What happened next shocked Jeanette as Quesnel did not write her a ticket but asked her to follow him to a dollar store so he could buy the diapers.

Jeanette said, “Deputy Dale showed me so much compassion. Not only did he not give me a speeding ticket — which I definitely deserved — but he spent his own money to buy diapers and wipes for my nieces.”

When friends, co-workers and family members knew what Quesnel did, they were not a bit surprised.  He has always been known to be kind, emphatic, and compassionate.  Spending his own money to help others is sort of a default for him whether on duty or not.

With a laugh, Quesnel said, “I guess I’m a soft cop, I don’t know … I like to help people out. I’ll help her or anybody. I’m not rich, I live like just about everybody else, but I like to help people.”

For Jeanette, she could not believe that a cop would go above and beyond. “Thank you for being so nice, and generous, and compassionate.”
