When three brothers sorted through their late mother’s house, they uncovered a treasure—their mother’s once-mentioned Superman No.1 comic book.

This 1939-issued comic, found in a box among other rare editions, brought in an astounding $9.1 million at auction, becoming the highest-selling comic ever.

Kept in superb condition due to San Francisco’s temperate weather, this copy maintained bright colors and crisp edges that impressed collectors and graders alike.

“It was just in an attic, sitting in a box—could have easily been thrown away, could’ve easily been destroyed in a thousand different ways,” said Lon Allen, vice-president of comics at Heritage Auctions.

After authentication, the book achieved a CGC 9.0 quality rating—the strongest ever for a Superman No.1 up for auction, with collectors thrilled by every aspect of its story and preservation.

Past Superman comics reached impressive sums too, but none as high; a previous CGC 1.8 copy sold for $160,000 this year, and a CGC 8.0 version garnered $5.3 million privately in 2022.

This amazing find reminds us that extraordinary treasures can be hidden in everyday places, waiting to bring wonder and smiles to generations.
