Scientists Uncover New Path to Stronger Bones

A breakthrough study from Leipzig University in Germany has revealed that the GPR133 receptor is crucial for building and maintaining healthy bones. By targeting this receptor, scientists may have found an innovative way to support people with osteoporosis and enhance bone strength.

“If this receptor is impaired by genetic changes, mice show signs of loss of bone density at an early age—similar to osteoporosis in humans,” explains Professor Ines Liebscher, lead investigator of the study published in Nature.

The team significantly improved bone strength in both healthy and osteoporotic mice using AP503, a substance that stimulates GPR133 and encourages bone growth. GPR133 works by activating signals between neighboring bone cells when they experience mechanical strain, boosting bone-forming cells and reducing bone breakdown.

This discovery could pave the way for therapies that strengthen both healthy and weakened bones, particularly benefiting women at risk of osteoporosis during menopause.

Earlier research also showed that AP503 helps strengthen skeletal muscle, further highlighting GPR133’s potential for medical uses. “The newly demonstrated parallel strengthening of bone once again highlights the great potential this receptor holds for medical applications in an aging population,” says Dr Juliane Lehmann, lead author of the study.

The research team is now pursuing further studies to learn more about GPR133’s functions in the body.
