Quick Smiles:

  • Fathers in Scottish prisons enjoy family meals and playful bonding through a new programme.
  • Sessions help dads reconnect with children in a positive setting, beyond traditional prison visits.
  • The initiative is expanding across Scotland, bringing joy and support to more families.

Dads at HMP Barlinnie in Scotland are taking part in the Healthy Dads, Healthy Kids (HDHK) programme, bringing families closer together in unique ways.

This innovative effort, delivered for the first time in a prison, lets dads and their children play, learn, and share meals in a relaxed environment.

The programme, created by experts from universities in Scotland and Australia, aims to improve health and nurture relationships for families affected by incarceration.

Over eight weeks, fathers join lessons on parenting and wellbeing and then participate in fitness and play activities with their children, strengthening the parent-child bond.

One dad shared,

“It’s been great to reconnect with my son in a way you probably cannot even put into words…”

Each session ends with families coming together for a meal, making the experience feel more like home.

Another participant said,

“Just the simple fact the family are sitting down having a meal with you, using a table. It’s a completely different dynamic.”

With proven success, the programme now trains more prison staff across Scotland, aiming to reach even more families at HMPs Low Moss, Shotts, Kilmarnock, and Dumfries.

This heartening initiative shows how thoughtful support can brighten lives and build stronger family foundations.
