  • Gilligan prides himself for being the office greeter at his shelter.
  • One night, his kennel was left with a loose latch, so he let himself out and treated himself to a party.
  • The shelter staff arrived the next day to a huge mess that covered most of the rooms and hallways.

Meet Gilligan, the Bedford County Humane Society‘s “wonderful office greeter.” He had a rough start to life, so he got the pass when he threw the craziest party for himself one night.

Gilligan was only a puppy when he arrived at the Pennsylvania shelter. He clearly had a lot of issues to overcome, so the shelter gave him the “office greeter” job in the hopes that he will warm up to different kinds of people.

Joyce Ross, a shelter employee, said that Gilligan has “definitely made progress.” He has learned to let the staff know whenever someone walks through the doors.

One night, a staff member was closing up for the night and was not able to lock Gilligan’s kennel correctly. The pup managed to free himself once everyone had gone home — and decided to treat himself to the craziest party ever.

The result was a huge mess that spanned several rooms and hallways!

Joyce shared, “Once he realized he was alone, he went straight for the toys. One by one, he pulled them out of the pile that we had just received from all of our Christmas donations, and he brought them in the hallway to play with them and to pull the squeakers out.”

The shelter staff didn’t have to guess who the culprit was when they arrived the next day. Gilligan was there to greet them!

“He had no remorse and he was happy to see a familiar face,” Joyce shared.

Fortunately, the mess was relatively contained and did not involve any food.

Gilligan was focused only on the squeaking toys, perhaps to show the other dogs that those toys were his now.

“Everyone at the shelter thought it was funny that, of course, he wouldn’t destroy anything in the building besides the dog toys, which had no chance,” Joyce said.

The staff members checked for salvageable toys and found that Gilligan only played with the toys that had squeakers. So they managed to recover some of the toys and clean up easily.

They couldn’t get mad at Gilligan, who they know deserves all the toy parties he wants.
