  • The beloved actress dedicates her award to the creators who gave her an extraordinary role
  • Her record-tying victory celebrates talent, perseverance, and the power of great storytelling

On September 14, beloved comedic actress Jean Smart made history at the 2026 Emmys. The “Hacks” star captured her fifth straight Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series trophy, winning every single season the show has aired. Only one other performer, Bill Cosby with “I Spy,” had previously achieved an undefeated streak for all seasons of a series.

Jean Smart brought the audience to their feet as she stepped onstage. She light-heartedly quipped about the discomfort of formal wear, joking, “You’re in your Spanx, and your corset, and your tape, and your shoes that are cutting your toes off, and you’re going, ‘Oh my God, she’s not that good. We just stood up because she’s old.’”

Jean Smart dedicated her award to the creative team behind “Hacks.”

“This one I’m dedicating to Lucia Aniello, Jen Statsky, and Paul W. Downs,” she said. “It all begins and ends with them. Thank you, thank you, thank you all so much. What a ride this has been.”

The show, which follows veteran comedian Deborah Vance and her younger writing partner, celebrates the strength and humor found in every season of life. Jean Smart’s heartfelt gratitude highlighted the supportive environment that allowed her talent to shine.

Fans across social media erupted with joy at her historic achievement. “LET’S GO!!! History has been made tonight! Jean Smart with an outstanding standing ovation and Emmy win for Hacks!” one viewer cheered. Another posted, “Sydney Sweeney lowkey set women back to the beginning of time, so Jean Smart had to become the first woman to win an Emmy for every season of a show, I don’t make the rules.”

In addition to the five-peat, Jean Smart now holds eight career Emmy wins, tying Cloris Leachman and Julia Louis-Dreyfus for the most ever. Her story stands as a shining reminder that dedication, warmth, and laughter can create moments that bring people together in celebration.
