Short Intense Workouts Show Anti-Cancer Promise
Quick Smiles:
- Just 10 minutes of intense exercise may send powerful signals to help fight cancer and repair DNA.
- Newcastle University discovered that energetic activity changes more than 1,300 genes in blood, including those linked to cancer cell growth.
- These findings inspire hope for future therapies that mimic exercise’s beneficial effects.
A new study reveals that brief, vigorous workouts release a boost of helpful molecules into the bloodstream, which may slow down cancer growth and speed up DNA repair.
The research team found that after only 10 minutes of intense cycling, several proteins and molecules in the blood increased to support DNA repair and metabolism while shutting off genes tied to rapid cancer cell growth.
Scientists at Newcastle University showed that these molecular changes affect over a thousand genes, including those involved in cell energy production and tumor growth control.
“What’s remarkable is that exercise doesn’t just benefit healthy tissues, it sends powerful signals through the bloodstream that can directly influence thousands of genes in cancer cells,” said Dr. Sam Orange, Senior Lecturer in Clinical Exercise Physiology at Newcastle University.
He added, “It opens the door to find ways that mimic or augment the biological effects of exercise, potentially improving cancer treatment and, crucially, patient outcomes.”
The positive effects are seen after just one short workout session, bringing hope that accessible exercise routines may offer added protection against bowel cancer, which is one of the most common cancers in the UK.
Nearly 20% lower risk of bowel cancer is linked to active lifestyles, and researchers plan to study how repeating workouts might offer even longer-lasting health benefits.
Whether you enjoy walking, cycling, gardening, or any energetic activity, every session adds up to support your wellbeing!
