A cherished Oregon waterfall on private land owned by Mount Angel Abbey since 1908 is becoming public treasure, thanks to a generous sale agreement.

State Senator Fred Girod secured $2 million in Senate Bill 5701 to buy 42 acres around the 92-foot plunge and 160 upstream acres from a timber company.

The abbey, praised as good stewards who facilitated public access, agreed to a fair price to preserve this tradition.

If the abbey insisted on getting top dollar then this wouldn’t have happened. They’ve been good stewards and bent over backward to make sure public access was guaranteed.

Plans focus on minimal development to protect the delicate site, possibly managed by county or state forestry, avoiding overcrowding.
