Sunny App Turns a Coffee Search Into a Bright Success

When architect Mo Dawod struggled to find a sunny spot for an iced coffee in London, he used his professional skills to solve the problem.

He created a mobile map that uses building heights and footprints to simulate sunlight and shadows over local cafes and restaurants.

What began as a personal hack quickly transformed into Sunseekr, a top-rated lifestyle app in the UK.

The invention was so successful that Dawod left his architecture career to run the platform full-time for more than 250,000 users.

“I decided to share it with the community to see if anyone was also struggling like me and would be interested,” said the 34-year-old.

“People went crazy. It went so viral on Reddit that night.”

The app has since expanded to Germany and Spain, allowing users to check hour-by-hour sun coverage and receive notifications when their favorite spots are glowing.

To maintain accuracy as the platform grows, the community is helping map outdoor seating areas across the country.

“It has been for me such a crazy journey. It was so unexpected,” Dawod shared regarding his viral success.

Quick Smiles:

  • The app uses sun and moon icons to quickly show whether a venue is in shade or sunlight.
  • It reached number one in the UK lifestyle charts just four days after launch.
  • Major brands have already partnered with the platform to help users find the best outdoor spots.

This clever invention shows how a simple personal frustration can lead to a solution that helps many people.
