After Cody Trenkle fell into a steep ravine near Goose Creek Lake, he endured nearly 80 hours alone, injured and dehydrated.Six-year-old bloodhound K-9 Daryl from the local correctional center used Cody’s shoes to scent track, and remarkably, located him within just 20 minutes.“Twenty minutes on a three-day-old track, that’s almost unheard of,” said Lt. Joe Gillam, K-9 unit leader. “As a parent myself with a 14-year-old, this was the best-case scenario because he was found alive.”Cody’s mother, Stephanie Neely, shared how relief washed over her: “I put all my faith in Daryl, and sure enough, 20 minutes later, all the alarms started going off. That’s when I knew they found him.”Though Cody suffered serious injuries and faced many days of recovery, his determination shone through. After regaining strength, he joyfully returned to school and humbly thanked Daryl when they finally met. “If I’d had to spend a couple more hours down there, I wouldn’t have made it. But because of him, 20 minutes, man, I’m impressed,” Cody said, expressing gratitude with, “Thank you. Thanks, Bubbas.”Stephanie described the emotional aftermath: “He was on a mission that day, which I’m grateful for. But just seeing him today and seeing Cody get to meet him, it’s pretty amazing.”The K-9 team received honors for their lifesaving actions, while Cody and his family cherish a new chapter filled with hope and resilience.Stories like this remind us of the extraordinary bond between people and their animal heroes—and the hope that can emerge even in the most difficult times.Source
