  • Time names the “Architects of AI” as 2025 Person of the Year.
  • Two unique covers feature leading tech innovators and artists’ visions.
  • The recognition highlights both potential and challenges of AI in society.

This year, artificial intelligence became a powerful force shaping nearly every area of American life. Time responded by recognizing the creators and visionaries behind AI as its 2025 Person of the Year, showcasing the profound influence the technology has had.

Time’s cover story highlights individuals designing and building AI, emphasizing how their efforts have shifted from theoretical to real-world changes. Editor-in-Chief Sam Jacobs said,

“This is the year we feel like the people who were designing, imagining and building artificial intelligence stopped debating about how to create this technology and started racing to deploy it, and there are enormous consequences for society.”

AI’s expanding use in every industry has been both inspiring and a source of concern, with leaders like Nvidia’s Jensen Huang stating,

“Every industry needs it, every company uses it, and every nation needs to build it. This is the single most impactful technology of our time.”

The magazine released two covers for 2025: one by digital painter Jason Seiler pays tribute to the iconic “Lunch atop a Skyscraper” photo, featuring leaders such as Mark Zuckerberg, Lisa Su, Elon Musk, Jensen Huang, Sam Altman, Demis Hassabis, Dario Amodei, and Fei-Fei Li. The other cover, created by Peter Crowther, illustrates “AI” under construction, filled with portraits of the same innovators, highlighting the collaborative nature of technological development.

The recognition follows years of Time acknowledging tech advancements, from the 1982 “Machine of the Year” honor for the computer, to naming notable leaders like Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg. Recent group recognitions, such as “The Guardians” in 2018 and “The Silence Breakers” in 2017, illustrate the magazine’s commitment to spotlighting those driving societal change.
