Times Square Prepares Double Ball Drop Celebration

New York City’s Times Square is set for a joyful twist this New Year’s Eve as, for the first time, two ball drops will dazzle the crowd. The second ball drop celebrates America’s upcoming 250th birthday and features a new colorful design inspired by the nation’s flag.

America250, a nonpartisan group created by Congress, is teaming up with the Times Square Alliance to organize this unique event. The extra ball drop will take place at around 12:04 a.m. EST and will shower the crowd with 2,000 pounds of red, white, and blue confetti while fireworks light up the sky to Ray Charles’ rendition of “America the Beautiful.”

“Our goal is to inspire all 350 million Americans to join in this moment to celebrate our country,”

Tom Harris, President of the Times Square Alliance, expressed excitement about uniting audiences in Times Square and beyond, adding,

“It’s perfect that this moment will be in partnership with America250 and the very first moment of a year’s worth of moments to celebrate our country’s 250 great years.”

For more historic excitement, look ahead to July 3, 2026, when the ball will drop again to mark the eve of the nation’s birthday, making it the first time ever for a non-New Year’s drop.
