Tongass Forest Communities Celebrate Court Win Protecting Ancient Rainforest

An Alaska district court judge has officially protected the Tongass National Forest by dismissing a lawsuit from logging interests.

This ruling ensures the world’s largest temperate rainforest remains a sanctuary for species like bald eagles and rare Haida ermines.

Judge Sharon L. Gleason dismissed the case with prejudice, preventing the logging companies from filing the same lawsuit again.

The decision safeguards ancient old-growth stands that are vital for the local ecosystem and climate stability.

“This ruling is a big victory for the Tongass’ old-growth forests. I’m relieved the court squarely rejected the logging industry’s rash attempt to force large-scale logging,” said Marlee Goska of the Center for Biological Diversity.

“We need to leave the Tongass standing for the sake of wildlife, climate, and local communities.”
