Quick Smiles:

  • UNESCO adds 26 new Biosphere Reserves, protecting 5% of Earth’s landmass.
  • Six countries received their first ever Biosphere Reserve designation this year.
  • Biosphere Reserves support sustainable living and preserve vital biodiversity globally.

A vast area equal to Bolivia has joined a unique network of protected lands and seas, as UNESCO’s Man and Biosphere Program expanded to 785 sites in 142 countries—now safeguarding 5% of Earth’s landmass.

This year, 26 new areas—including first-time designations for Angola, Djibouti, Equatorial Guinea, Iceland, Oman, and Tajikistan—were welcomed to the global Biosphere Reserve system, helping protect one million additional square kilometers since 2018.

“With nearly thirty new designations this year, our World Network of Biosphere Reserves has reached a major milestone, now protecting 5% of the planet. Within these reserves, new ways of balancing nature conservation with sustainable livelihoods are being forged every day. UNESCO will continue to mobilize states, scientists, civil society, and local and Indigenous communities to continue this positive momentum,” said Audrey Azoulay, Director-General of UNESCO.

Biosphere Reserves are not just about conserving wilderness; they aim to harmonize human activity with nature through partnerships, community initiatives, and educational programs for all ages.

They safeguard some of our planet’s richest and most delicate habitats, sheltering over 60% of terrestrial vertebrate species and key ecosystems like mangroves and seagrass meadows while inspiring local action from legendary sites like Yellowstone and the Channel Islands to vibrant new reserves across four continents.

Ongoing efforts—including innovative projects like the Amazonia Project—ensure that science, sustainability, and culture come together to create thriving environments for both people and wildlife.

With every new site, the world takes a hopeful step toward protecting nature and supporting communities—making our shared future brighter and more resilient.
