  • Catherine-Sofia made the decision to come out to her mom, then eventually to the rest of the world.
  • The teenager wanted a personal touch to her coming out, so she decided to write them in cupcakes.
  • She posted a video showing the sweet interaction where her mother responds to her coming out in a very nonchalant manner.

This is a story about a high school student from North Carolina, coming out to her mom. Her name is Catherine-Sofia Dols. There came a point when she decided that she wants to tell her mom that she is gay… that she is ready to talk about this part of her life.

“I thought that it would be really personal for me to do it that way,” she said.

Catherine-Sofia bakes vegan cupcakes, so what better way is there for her to make this personal statement than doing it with something that she enjoys the most, right?

She came out, spelling the words “I like girls” using icing on cupcakes. She recorded the moment to capture the precious reveal. The video was posted on TikTok with now more than three million views.

There was a pause before her mom understood what the words on the cupcakes mean, but when she did, she said “I kinda knew that,” before going over to where her daughter was standing to hug her.

She had to double-check if what she just read is what her daughter is saying. Her mom asked if she liked girls “sexually”, to which she replied “yeah.” The mom exclaimed “Really?” before heading to their kitchen casually, back to do mom stuff.

Catherine-Sofia made the decision to post the video on social media, thinking that this would be how she comes out to the rest of the world.

“I was actually really surprised at how much positivity I got,” she said. “A lot of comments were of people telling me that they wish their parents would react the way my mom did, and it really saddens me to know that there are kids out there or even adults out there who get disowned from their own family.”

“I felt really comforted about her reaction and I felt like she was a really good mom for already knowing,” Catherine-Sofia said. “I felt accepted.”

Here is to hoping that other parents of LGBTQ+ children learn how to respond to their children by the time they decide to come out.
