West Virginia Woman Sets Up Food Pantry for Her Community
- A woman from West Virginia decided to help out her community amid the pandemic.
- Each week, she would take about $100-$200 from her paycheck to restock the food pantry that she set up in her own home.
- She said that her neighbors helped her when she lost everything in a 1995 flood, so she didn’t hesitate to give back now.
Everyone has had their own struggles to deal with over the past year. But instead of focusing only on supporting herself, one woman from West Virginia saw it as an opportunity to help her community by setting up a food pantry in her own home.
Jackson County native Rhonda Lee launched the community pantry using her own money.
She told WSAZ that she would take about $100-$200 out of her paycheck every week to restock.
After helping out a friend who was short on food, Rhonda realized that she was in a position to help a lot more people.
Rhonda even got laid off from her job in June 2020. Still, she continued to help by using her savings to keep the pantry going to this day.
She said that her community helped her out when she lost everything to a flash flood back in 1995. Now, it’s her turn to give back.
Rhonda shared, “I know what it’s like to get up one day and everything’s gone, and you’re starting over. They helped me, [now] I’m in a position, I’m gonna help others.”
Rhonda has offered to help anyone at anytime without asking questions. She said that she could even drop off the supplies herself if someone finds it too difficult to travel to her pantry!
She added, “We don’t tell people no. We just say, ‘How can we help?’ ‘What do you need?’”
Rhonda was awarded the title of WSAZ’s Hometown Hero for her selfless act of service. What a well-deserved honor!
