Family Adopts Abandoned Dog who Followed Them Home [Video]

When an abandoned dog saw kindness from strangers at a gas station, she decided to follow them and take her chance.

Leilani Wong and her husband decided to stop at a gas station in Stockton, California to take a quick break from their road trip with their dog.

As Leilani waited for her husband to fill up the tank, she spotted a smiley dog wandering around the gas station. The dog then stopped near their car and stared at her. When Leilani tried to get her husband’s attention to let him know, the dog started following him.

She asked people around the area if the dog belonged to anyone, and she learned that the gas station was a popular spot for abandoning unwanted animals.

The dog continued to follow Leilani as she asked around.

When she noticed that the dog kept panting in the 105 degree weather, she gave her water and some dog food. The pup seemed grateful, so she thought that the pup may have been abandoned or a stray.

She and her husband decided to bring the dog along on their road trip until they could find an available shelter.

They named her Kaia.

Leilani’s husband slept in the car to keep Kaia company during their first night out. She said that the poor pup was “scared, nervous, and timid,” and would only interact with them when given food.

Kaia was already attached to them by the time they reached their Washington home.

They brought her to the vet to get vaccinated and checked. They had planned to simply prepare Kaia to get adopted, but since she has been getting along well with the couple and their other dogs, they couldn’t give her up anymore.

Kaia still has a lot to learn. While she has been slowly opening up, she still doesn’t understand what to do with toys or treats.

Still, she makes sure to show her new family her loving and energetic personality.

From being “very timid, scared, unsure of herself, and not confident” at first, Kaia is now a “lovey, snuggly, cuddly” dog who follows her favorite human everywhere, says Leilani.

Leilani now tells people that Kaia’s “the best dog” she’s ever had.
