  • A woman whose car broke down last year has been walking to and from her workplace.
  • While walking home, Diane Gordon found a plastic bag full of cash and returned it, which inspired Stacey Connell to set up a GoFundMe to raise money for her new vehicle.
  • Diane now has a new green Jeep Compass purchased using the money raised from GoFundMe.

Diane Gordon has been walking three miles to and from her workplace after her car broke down in February of last year.

One day, on her way home, she stopped for a snack at a gas station when she spotted something on the ground.

That something was a plastic bag with a large sum of money in it. And when she turned it over there was even more money.

But the grandmother of two recalled that she knew exactly what to do. Diane said:  “This doesn’t belong to me, I need to call a police officer.” And when the authorities arrived, she handed them the plastic bag with $14,780 in cash.

Also inside the bag were cards for a couple who got married earlier that day and so the officers knew who to return it to.

Police Chief Dan Keller of the White Lake Township Police Department said, “There were wedding cards with a name on it, and we were able to get the money back to them.”

Chief Keller said that Diane did not hesitate and questioned her decision to hand over what she found.

Diane thinks that what she did is nothing special as she only returned what does not belong to her.

But her good deed did not go unnoticed as Stacy Connell, wife of one of the police officers who responded to Diane’s call, set up a GoFundMe to raise money to purchase a vehicle for Diane.

And in just a few days, more than $66,000 was raised, more than enough for a local car dealership, Szott Auto Group to deliver a green Jeep Compass for Diane! As of this writing, more than $82,000 was raised since the fundraising campaign started.

Diane said, “I am floored. I am having a hard time keeping it in. I am just so excited.”

The jeep has a steering wheel warmer and a backup camera, things that she has never had before. And she plans on giving her co-workers a ride home if they need one to pay it forward.

Good job, Diane!
