  • Logan Smallwood becomes one of the UK’s youngest licensed train drivers.
  • Inspired by his great-grandad and a model Silver Link locomotive.
  • Volunteers on the scenic Weardale Railway after graduating with honors.

Logan Smallwood has transformed a lifelong passion for trains into a remarkable achievement, becoming one of the youngest qualified train drivers in the UK.

He has always known he wanted to drive trains, a dream sparked by cherished memories of his great-grandad and a beloved coal model of the Silver Link locomotive.

“I’ve always loved trains… I’ve always said when I grow up, I want to be a train driver,” Smallwood shared.

Raised in Lanchester, County Durham, Logan began volunteering on the picturesque Weardale Railway, where his love for locomotives flourished.

The recent lowering of the minimum train driver age to 18 gave Logan the chance to realize his ambition soon after finishing his diploma in Engineering Technologies with honors from Newcastle College Rail Academy.

His mother was filled with pride as Logan completed his first solo journey behind the controls of the heritage Sentinel shunter locomotive.

Logan continues to nurture his love of trains by designing model railway layouts at his local club during his free time.
