Quick Smiles:

  • Meet a 95-year-old great-grandmother who dances her way to good health.
  • Mary Marson attributes her vitality to Zumba and organic food.
  • Her zest for life inspires both young and old at her local leisure center.

In the vibrant community of Deptford, southeast London, a remarkable great-grandmother is proving that age is just a number.

At 95, Mary Marson attends Zumba classes three times a week, and she credits this lively routine with keeping her in tip-top shape.

Having grown up in Jamaica, Mary combines her love for organic food with her passion for dance, resulting in a life free from health issues, save for the occasional cold.

Her commitment to attending the dance workouts at her local leisure centre has not gone unnoticed.

Mary has become a local legend, inspiring others to embrace fitness.

“I can do everything in the routine. I can even bend down and touch the floor!” she proudly shares.

For Mary, the music is a key motivator.

“I love the music. It really gets me motivated,” she says, showcasing her enduring enthusiasm.

A naturally optimistic person, Mary believes her positive attitude contributes to her well-being.

“I just cannot feel ‘old’!” she exclaims, attributing some of her longevity to good genes, as her parents also lived long lives.

The leisure centre staff consider Mary part of their family, celebrating her birthday each year with balloons and cake.

Mary encourages other seniors to take a leap of faith and try new activities.

“A lot of them may be motivated by fear,” she says.

“They might think, ‘I can’t mix with younger people’.”

Mary warns against the perils of a sedentary lifestyle, saying, “People can make themselves ill by sitting in a chair all day, thinking they can’t do things.”

Her advice is simple: “I would tell them to join in – they will probably become an inspiration to those younger people. They won’t regret it!”

Her family, which includes four children, four grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren, beams with pride over her achievements.

Fitness instructor Topaz White, who leads the Zumba classes, describes Mary as everyone’s “She-ro,” a beacon of inspiration for all.

In a playful nod to Mary’s influence, she suggests, “Everyone should #BeMoreMary”.
