- Alice’s Kids charity donates $175,000 for over 800 students.
- Students celebrate the surprise announcement during a school assembly.
In a delightful twist of fate for Southern California high school seniors, Steve Carell has stepped in to sprinkle a bit of joy amidst the aftermath of devastating wildfires.
The beloved actor and comedian announced via social media that he is collaborating with the charity Alice’s Kids to cover prom expenses for seniors at six high schools in Pasadena.
“If you have already paid for your prom tickets, they will reimburse you for your prom tickets. It’s a pretty good deal,” Carell shared, adding a touch of his signature humor.
The wildfires in the Los Angeles area have wreaked havoc, destroying over 16,000 structures and claiming at least 29 lives, particularly affecting communities in the Pacific Palisades and Altadena areas.
The fires also left a mark on school campuses, forcing thousands of students and parents to navigate the chaos of finding new classrooms.
To bring a glimmer of hope, Alice’s Kids is donating approximately $175,000 to enable more than 800 students to attend their prom.
Tickets for this cherished event typically cost between $100 and $150 each.
“Going to prom should be a celebration, and we wanted to help make the big night just a little easier for seniors whose lives have been turned upside down by the wildfires,” expressed Ron Fitzsimmons, executive director of Alice’s Kids.
“Hopefully this allows the students to unwind and have some fun after a devastating year.”
The surprise announcement was met with cheers and applause at John Muir High School, one of the beneficiary schools, as seen in a video shared online.
Aveson Charter School, another recipient, suffered severe damage, with its campus for younger students burned down and the building for older students rendered unusable.
Adding to his generous efforts, Carell recently participated in the “Skate for LA Strong” hockey tournament, a star-studded event aimed at raising funds for fire relief.
In his closing remarks, Carell shared a simple yet heartfelt message: “Have fun, enjoy the prom. And remember, this is Steve Carell.”
