  • Eight-year-old Mia Vane has aplastic anemia, a rare blood disorder damaging the bone marrow and causing the body to stop producing new blood cells to fight infections.
  • Her condition limited her, she couldn’t play outside and even go to school.
  • Thanks to her family and an organization for giving her a therapy dog for free, which will “let her be a kid again.”

Mia Vane of Nevada used to be so active. She spent most of her time in school and in the soccer field, until she started getting bruises all over her body.

“I just started bruising after I was playing soccer,” Mia told GMA. “And they just started getting all purple and stuff.”

Initially, her parents supposed that it was only because of her physical and outdoor activities, but when her condition worsened, getting in and out of the hospital, Mia’s parents knew it was something serious.

With all the check-ups and tests on her, the little soccer player was diagnosed with aplastic anemia — a rare blood disorder causing the body to stop producing new blood cells to fight infections. The disease also damages the bone marrow and its only cure is an extremely high-risk bone marrow transplant.

As Mia needs to avoid infections of any kind, she had to stay out of school and stop playing soccer. With all her routines snatched away from her in a snap, Mia wished for a dog to help her get through it.

Guide and therapy dogs, specially trained to help people with issues, would be helpful for Mia. Unfortunately, they can cost up to $25,000 for all the careful breeding and massive trainings they’ve undergone — but this didn’t hinder Mia’s aunt, Blake Brady.

Blake appealed to 4E Kennels Healing Hearts program, a therapy dog training program that gives free service dogs to people in need but cannot afford it.

The thoughtful aunt shared Mia’s story in a recorded video which hit the people at 4E Kennels. In a jiffy, the group granted the little girl’s wish and she was up for a big surprise.

When 4E Kennels surprised Mia with 10-month-old goldendoodle Dougie, her face lit up with waves of joy shining through!

Jeanette Forrey of 4E Kennels was equally happy she made the right match. “What an incredible young girl defying the odds, but being knocked down again and again by something she cannot control. To bring just a small amount of sunshine and comfort and companionship to help her through the darkest days and the brightest moments is incredibly exciting.”

Dougie was specially taught to apply therapeutic pressure to Mia’s body and will be at her service 24/7. More than this, Mia will be able to safely play outside with Dougie on guard.

Blake said that the total therapy dog experience will free Mia up. “It’s gonna let her be a kid again.”
