Quick Smiles:

  • A wild polar bear mother in northern Canada adopted an orphaned cub, a rare event captured on camera.
  • Researchers confirmed only 13 adoptions among over 4,600 polar bears in the region in nearly five decades.
  • The adopted cub now has a brighter future with its new mom and sibling.

In northern Canada, scientists tracked a polar bear family and discovered a heartwarming surprise: the mom was caring for a cub that wasn’t her own.

This rare act was witnessed near Churchill, Manitoba, as polar bears migrate along Western Hudson Bay.

Initially seen with only one biological cub last spring, the mother was found with two cubs during the fall.

That confirmed the adoption because only one cub had a tracking tag.

Such adoptions are exceptionally rare, with just 13 cases among more than 4,600 bears over 50 years in this area.

Photographer Dave Sandford captured images and video, describing the moment as a gift, and helped scientists with vital evidence of the adoption.

“It gave us the opportunity to photograph them and submit the evidence and story,” Sandford said.

Alyssa McCall of Polar Bears International shared that, “it gave us a lot of hope. It’s another reminder of how fascinating and incredible these animals are.”

With their adoptive mom, the cubs’ chances at survival increase, as she will nurse, protect, and teach them for at least another year.

This remarkable family will soon venture onto the sea ice, where the cubs will learn important lessons for life in the wild.
