High School Students Fill Football Field With Groceries to Restock Local Food Banks

Quick Smiles:

  • Students collected over 250,000 pounds of food in one weekend
  • Every donation bag was placed across an entire football field
  • The drive became the largest single effort in Dermer Dreams history

Rows upon rows of bright yellow bags lined the grass of Howell High School’s football field last week. Hundreds of New Jersey students had spent the weekend collecting groceries as part of the second annual 100-Yard Food Drive Challenge.

The donations totaled more than a quarter-million pounds and were delivered straight to food banks across the state. Organizers say the single collection marked the biggest food drive Dermer Dreams has ever recorded.

“The kids really took ownership this year,” one volunteer told reporters. “They wanted to show that small actions add up to something huge.”

Community members dropped off canned goods, pasta, and fresh produce at collection points before volunteers arranged everything end-zone to end-zone. The sight of the full field quickly became a symbol of local generosity and teamwork.

“It felt like the whole town was behind us,” another participant shared. “Seeing those bags stretch across the fifty-yard line gave everyone a boost.”

Food-bank directors say the fresh supplies will help thousands of families facing short-term shortages. The drive’s success has already inspired neighboring schools to plan similar events next year.
