When a car flipped over in Pittsburghs Chateau neighborhood, Nathaniel Bunn didnt hesitate to help. With his son and father nearby, he rushed toward the overturned vehicle where the driver was trapped inside, silent and unseen. Bunn and a group of bystanders worked together, trying to pry open the doorone person even brought a tire ironbut none of their efforts could free her.

Realizing tools couldn’t solve everything, Bunn made a profoundly human choice. He sat down beside the car and offered his hand through the window, quietly supporting the trapped woman until help arrived. “I resigned to sit down and just told her to hold my hand,” he later explained.

The driver, though unable to speak, squeezed his hand for comfort. “She squeezed it for comfort,” Bunn recalled. “You can squeeze my hand, for comfort. Everything’s going to be OK. We can’t get the door open, but just hang on. Help’s on the way.”

Bunn noticed that while some people tried to help, others stood back filming with their phones. This troubled him, but he remained present for the woman, determined to share kindness. “I was feeling kind of in despair,” he admitted. “Just because of how the world was going on.”

He stayed by her side, holding her hand in the street, until paramedics arrived and took over. Later, Bunn called the hospital, hoping for good news about the driver. “They said no one’s in critical condition. I didn’t even know her name.”

Bunn hopes the experience inspires others, reminding everyone that compassion is always possible. “I’m glad that I was there to help her, and hope she was comforted by my actions. If you see somebody in this situation where you can help, try to help them. Don’t be selfish.”
