  • Serendipitous lunchtime trip leads to a life-changing encounter with an abandoned puppy.
  • A retired couple grieving their dog’s loss finds solace and joy in adopting the rescued pup.
  • The once-abandoned dog now thrives on a 20-acre farm, surrounded by love and companionship.

Just before the festive season last year, an unexpected encounter unfolded as I stumbled upon a pitbull-mix puppy named Lola at the edge of the woods near my neighborhood.

This serendipitous meeting happened during a rare lunchtime visit home, where I was simply returning to turn off a crockpot.

With only cat food at hand, I cautiously approached Lola, placing the food on the ground. Despite her initial hesitation, hunger won over fear, and as she ate, her tail wagged with uncontainable joy.

Leaving her behind was tough, but I hoped the universe would keep her safe until I returned.

After work, armed with dry dog food, a collar, a leash, and a hot rotisserie chicken, I returned to the woods, calling out to her.

“Come here baby, come on.”

From the distance, I heard her crashing through the underbrush, eager to reunite.

Once trust was established, aided by the enticing chicken, I easily placed a collar on Lola and took her to our vet.

Her condition was concerning, with skin issues and worms, and although she was chipped, it wasn’t registered—a reminder for dog owners to complete this crucial step.

The vet estimated she was about seven months old. After treatment, my husband agreed she could stay the night, provided the fleas and ticks were dealt with promptly.

Efforts to find Lola’s original owners were fruitless, despite posting her pictures across social media and local pet finder groups.

However, fortune smiled upon us when a retired couple, who had previously worked in animal rescue, saw Lola’s picture.

They had recently lost one of their two dogs and were seeking a companion for their other pet, Buster.

A few weeks later, we met, and Lola joyfully joined her new family on a sprawling 20-acre farm, complete with other animals.

Her new mom frequently updates me on Lola’s progress. Initially in poor health, Lola has since gained weight and overcome her ailments.

My husband and I visited her recently, and we plan to see her again soon.

Her new mom often tells me, “I saved Lola’s life,” yet I feel Lola also mended our hearts after the loss of our mastiff.

I always remind her that she is the one who wrote the ending of her story:

“and she lived happily ever after.”
