Ancient Roman Razor Up for Auction
Quick Smiles:
- 2,000-year-old Roman razor discovered, now heading to auction in England
- The iron blade shows the importance Romans placed on grooming and style
- This rare artifact reveals fascinating traditions, from emperor trends to coming-of-age rituals
An ancient Roman razor, believed to be over 2,000 years old, will soon find a new home at auction in England. The 3.5-inch iron blade highlights just how much personal grooming mattered to Romans, with a design that includes a finger hole for easy use and attachment to a barber’s belt.
“I’m not sure how close a shave you would get, but imagine if it could talk,” said Charles Hanson, the auctioneer offering the unique relic.
Roman society held cleanliness and shaving in high esteem. For the wealthy, being clean shaven was part of urbanitas, the ideal of polished city living. Many renowned figures—like Augustus, Julius Caesar, and Cicero—chose a smooth look, while portraits and coins from the era often depict beardless faces.
After Emperor Hadrian, beards became more common among Roman leaders, but for many years, razors like this symbolized refinement and tradition. Entrusting one’s shave to a barber even held risk for Rome’s elite, leading figures like Dionysus to rely on family for their grooming and Emperor Domitian to ban razors in crowds for safety.
“Dionysus was so afraid of trusting a barber he made his daughters learn how to shave him,” said Hansons Auctioneers historical consultant, Simon Bartley.
The razor, known as a novacila, is a rare example preserved outside private collections. Shaving also marked an important rite of passage, with the first beard removal at age 21 celebrated in a ceremony called depositio barbae, often with the hair offered to the gods.
Earlier razors eventually led to the invention of the forfex, an ancestor to modern scissors, underlining the Roman creativity that shaped daily life. Discoveries like this continue to shed light on the customs and innovations of the ancient world.
