A Houston-area mother and her 8-month-old baby are on the mend after a dramatic New Year’s Day rescue. Their minivan crashed into Dickinson Bayou late Thursday night, but hope arrived in the form of a Good Samaritan nearby.

A homeless man living close to the bayou witnessed the vehicle plunge into the water and quickly acted, launching his canoe toward the sinking car.

He paddled through the bayou and safely brought both passengers to shore before local authorities arrived.

“We are grateful for his quick and selfless actions,” the Dickinson Police Department shared in a statement.

Emergency crews transported the mother and baby to a hospital as a precaution, but both are now safely home. Authorities noted the infant was securely strapped in a car seat, and there was no indication of alcohol or drugs involved.
