A beloved morning television personality is embarking on an exciting new journey that’s bringing joy during a challenging time in her personal life.

Savannah Guthrie, co-anchor of NBC’s “Today” show, revealed her unexpected career move during a Monday interview with Jimmy Fallon. The late-night host shared the surprise announcement that Guthrie will host a brand-new game show based on the wildly popular word puzzle game Wordle.

“This is very exciting,” Fallon announced enthusiastically.

“I have a big announcement to make. We’ve been developing Wordle as a game show for the past two-and-a-half years with The New York Times. And it’s official — we are making Wordle Game Show with our host, Savannah Guthrie!”

The web-based puzzle game launched in 2021 and quickly captured America’s heart, becoming one of the country’s most played daily games. Players receive a new five-letter word each day and have six attempts to guess the correct answer. The New York Times recognized the phenomenon and purchased the game in January 2022 for an estimated $3 million.

The television adaptation will bring the beloved game to life in an arena setting with Guthrie at the helm. The show promises to be a “super fast-paced and fun… family game” where contestants compete for cash prizes. Guthrie shared that she and Fallon had been keeping this exciting secret under wraps for quite some time.

“I’m so happy it’s you,” Fallon told Guthrie warmly.

“We were looking, we’re like, ‘Who’s the perfect host of this?’ We need to have someone that looks like they play Wordle, someone that knows how to run a show and host it. And we did the pilot, and you are amazing, by the way.”

The project faced an unexpected delay earlier this year due to a family crisis. Guthrie’s mother, Nancy Guthrie, 84, went missing from her Tucson, Arizona, home on February 1st. The show had been scheduled to begin production in March, but in a touching display of compassion, Fallon, NBC, and all production partners immediately paused everything.

“I just want to say a quick thank you to NBC and to Jimmy and his production company and the New York Times and the studio and Universal because when everything happened with me and my family,” Guthrie shared with visible emotion.

“They just stopped everything and said, ‘We’ll wait for you.’ And Hollywood is a really tough business. And I didn’t expect that, and I just want to say thank you, it means so much to me.”

The gesture speaks volumes about the genuine relationships Guthrie has built throughout her career and the respect her colleagues have for her during this difficult personal time. Three months after Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance, the search continues with authorities working to find leads in the case.

Despite the ongoing family situation, Guthrie is finding comfort in moving forward with meaningful projects.

“It kind of feels strange to do everything right now,” Guthrie admitted honestly.

“But this is something that’s full of joy.”

The Wordle game show represents more than just a career milestone — it’s a beacon of positivity and a chance to bring families together through wholesome entertainment. Fans of both Guthrie and the beloved word game are eagerly awaiting the premiere of this feel-good television event.
