Camden Celebrates First Homicide-Free Summer in Decades
Quick Smiles:
- Camden, NJ, enjoys its first homicide-free summer in 50 years.
- Community-focused policing strengthens bonds and safety.
- Cities and countries seek to learn from Camden’s success.
This summer marks a turning point for Camden, New Jersey, as the city experienced no homicides for the first time in five decades. A sweeping change in law enforcement and a fresh approach to building community trust have created a safer, more hopeful atmosphere for residents.
“We dissolved the police department of Camden City, formed and brought up a new county department that oversees this city,” said Camden County Commissioner Director Lou Cappelli Jr.
Officers now work closely with neighborhoods, forging lasting relationships and serving as community partners. Supported by the Real Time Tactical Operation Intelligence Center and over a thousand street cameras, safety quickly improved.
“Homicides are down 75%. I’m just so happy for the residents of this city. They deserve this kind of safety,” Cappelli told ABC 6 Action News.
Engagement with local charities and organizations has helped children see officers as allies, encouraging positivity and collaboration. The city’s success has now drawn interest from both other U.S. cities and international communities eager to replicate Camden’s model.
If this progress continues, Camden could see many more peaceful summers ahead. Don’t forget to share this uplifting milestone with friends and family!
