Duke, a 10-year-old Husky, knows when his owners are packing for a trip, and he’s determined not to be left behind. When Kristina Neely and her family start loading their suitcases, Duke springs into action to join the adventure.

“When Duke sees our suitcases being packed, he knows we are leaving, and he does NOT like being left,” Neely shared.

This clever pup raced outside and waited patiently by the car, hoping to secure his spot on the family trip. His plan worked, and the Neelys brought Duke along, a scenario that’s become a regular routine now that they’re empty nesters who love spoiling him.

Even when Duke can’t join due to airline rules, the family finds creative ways to comfort him, like leaving the TV on and talking to him through a camera system.

“Earlier this year, Duke howled so much while we were away for the weekend, my neighbors posted about him on the Nextdoor app and even called the police for a wellness check because they thought something had happened to us,” Neely recalled.

Experts say dogs learn the meaning of packed bags through association—recognizing sights, sounds, and scents from past experiences. To help pets feel at ease, positive reinforcement such as affection and treats is recommended when the luggage comes out.
