  • Innovative hologram glasses share live stats and cues.
  • Haptic devices let spectators feel every judo throw.
  • Fans of all hearing abilities enjoy a shared experience.

This year, the 2025 Summer Deaflympics in Tokyo introduced remarkable technology that changed the way fans engage with live sports. Organizers debuted special eyeglasses projecting holograms of athlete stats and key action cues, helping all spectators connect more deeply with the event.

Judo fans received haptic feedback devices worn around the neck, providing real-time vibrations with each throw, strike, and movement captured by advanced sensors.

“Originally built for concerts, the tech uses sensors and human tuning to capture the nuance of live sport, giving spectators clear cues and a visceral sense of impact,” writes Paul Carter, a BBC technology journalist.

“The result is an immersive, shared experience that’s bringing deaf and hearing fans closer together.”

Instead of simply watching or hearing the action, spectators now feel the exhilarating ‘thwack’ of a judo throw through precise vibrations, complemented by lighter feedback echoing crowd reactions. This technology is so engaging that even hearing fans celebrate the new way to experience the energy of judo matches.

“Even though I can hear sound, the device really conveys the atmosphere of the venue,” said Nana Watanabe, a judo fan and spectator. “It feels like we can share the intensity together. I think it’s wonderful.”
